UNDSCVRD Court
Designing a Space and Website to Spark Community Engagement
Background
The UNDSCVRD Court is a community project developed by Kultivate Labs, the non-profit behind the Undiscovered SF Night Markets.
The goal of Kultivate Lab’s newest project, UNDSCVRD Court, is to bring vibrancy into a gritty part of the SOMA Pilipinas cultural district on Stevenson St. They are taking over part of a parking lot and turning it into a community event+recreation space.
Kultivate Labs turned to Plinth to art direct the design of this new space and develop a website that would communicate its purpose and invite people to participate in upcoming events.
Design INSPIRED BY THE FILIPINO DIASPORA
SOMA Pilipinas is not the a part of the Philippines, rather it is part of the story of the Philippine diaspora. To communicate that the UNDSCVRD Court is place that is a San Francisco space tied to the global culture of the Filipino people, we refrained from using designs typically associated with the Philippine flag.
Instead, we took inspiration from Philippine Vinta sails to signal that SOMA Pilipinas is a place where Filipinos traveled to and made their own.
Designed for community engagement
A major goal of the project was to encourage participation, our geometric design made it easier for community members to participate in painting the mural and court.
Bright Colors and bold shapes
We chose to use bright colors to fill the bold Vinta sail patterns to give the space a vibrant energy that would contrast the the gritty city scape.
The patterns and color palette encouraged attendees to take photos of themselves and share on social media.
UNDSCVRD COURT WEBSITE
We designed the website to emulate the vibrancy and energy of the UNDSCVRD Court.
Vinta Sail the patterns and colors were used throughout website for brand consistency.
On mobile, the site features bold tiles to make it easy for users to scroll through each section and find new events with one hand.
